RESILIENCE RISING

Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas

16”x20”

July 2024

This painting honors women who have led the fight against sexual and domestic violence, from Tarana Burke, who started the “Me Too” movement, to Tracy Thurman inspiring the Family Violence Prevention and Response Act alongside other unnamed figures representing those advocating for change. The painting depicts survivors rising from the ashes, symbolizing resilience and hope. Using teal and purple as the primary colors, the vibrancy highlights the importance of this pursuit and raises awareness of sexual and domestic violence.

BREAKING SILENCE

Mixed Media
11"x14"
March 2024

This mixed-media artwork uses acrylic, watercolor, and pastels to depict the struggle of reclaiming one’s voice and agency. Removing the stifling tape reveals a vibrant spectrum of color radiating from the liberated figure. Inspired by the rhythm of sound waves and the impassioned flow of spoken word poetry, the texture and depth capture dynamic energy of authenticity. Each brushstroke embodies a vow to amplify marginalized voices and advocate for those facing challenges of injustice.

IMPRISONING SHADOWS

Acrylic on canvas
8"x10"
May 2023

In this self-portrait, I sit captive by the day’s waning shadows imprisoning me in my yellow chair. Working in the mental health field, I felt overwhelmed by the failure of the systems built to protect and care for these individuals. This painting depicts my debilitating sense of powerlessness that impaired my ability to adequately care for myself and others.

GENERATIONAL TRAUMA

Acrylic on canvas
May 2023

In this painting I portray the complexity of transgenerational trauma. Without a vision of the long line of dominos coming before the present moment, it’s easy to hold a one-dimensional view of people and their situations. The viewer is encouraged to be curious about the different figures, their roles, and how we each might be a force for good, combating the momentum of decades past.

TECTONICS AT PLAY

Acrylic on canvas
22"x28"
January 2024

This mossy landscape was inspired by my recent travels in Iceland.  The scene is located on the mid-atlantic ridge where two tectonic plates interact. Icelandic landscapes tend to have a very surreal feel to them and I can see why they often film movies there!

JUNE 15, ON TOP OF THE WORLD

Acrylic on canvas
January 2023

In this artwork, I explore how memories may be perceived both individually and collectively. Here, I captured a sacred moment from a recent birthday spent in the Flint Hills. The universal experience of witnessing a sunset invites connection by drawing out memories from each of us. I intentionally selected a small size for this work so the viewer would be compelled to come close and intimately experience my painted memory. I invite you to draw near, embracing the rhythms of nature we share, reminiscing on a moment you spent appreciating a sunset.

HARBOUR HILLS

Acrylic on canvas
February 2023

I spent my earliest years admiring Kansas’s never-ending skies. Although I have since moved away, I still find a retreat in the Flint Hills while visiting my family. Here, I capture the familiar and comforting landscape of my Manhattan oasis.
I hope that the viewer feels the same sense of restorative solace these hills bring me.
